it is impossible to tell the difference
in chip version until you install it in a gamecube
because they look the same on the outside.

Here is what I gather from forums about the versions:

 

   Xeno GC Version 1.1 -
         - when you hold start while booting, the
          screen shows BIOS v 1.01, but has NO MENU.


 

   Xeno GC Version 1.5 - Xeno GC Version 2.0
          - when you hold start while booting, the
          menu says XenoGC Shell v 1.05, shows the
          contents of the disc, and ALLOWS BOOTING
          MULTI-GAME DISCS.

 

 

Unfortunately the Gamecube Xeno GC is a simple drive chip, not upgradeable by DVD.
